February 10th, 2022 by WCBC Radio

Lt Governor Boyd Rutherford has joined the charge to drop school mask mandates in Maryland. This week the House Republican Caucus signed off on a letter to the State Board of Education requesting the superintendent and school board immediately rescind the policy requiring face coverings of all students in public schools, including the elimination or modification of all three of the off-ramps. The letter asks that local board’s of education be given a free hand in deciding whether or not to require masks in their schools. Rutherford said the off-ramps are too stringent and nearly impossible to meet…

State Superintendent Mohammed Choudhury said the approach has proven effective in other states…

The State Board of Education said in a statement that the board will continue its practice of reviewing current COVID-19 metrics in the State to assess the need for the continuation of the regulation, saying the emergency regulation does provide research-based off-ramps for local school systems and schools based on vaccination and transmission rates. The State Board has and continues to rely upon science, research, and guidance from public health experts, including the CDC and the Maryland Department of Health in its efforts to ensure schools remain safely open.
