Sewage Leak & Safety Advisory Due To Flooding

May 19th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County is alerting residents to a sewage overflow impacting Braddock Run as a result of the major flooding event on May 13. The flooding has caused significant damage to the County's 15-inch sewer interceptor line, which connects to LaVale's system at Red Hill.

Current Situation:

The intense flooding dislodged several manhole covers, allowing gravel and debris to fill the system.  Sections of the sewer line have ruptured, and sewage from the Frostburg area is currently overflowing into Braddock Run in the Red Hill area.  LaVale has closed the Red Hill valve to prevent further downstream contamination from debris. The damage is extensive and requires large-scale repairs, including bypass pumping and full replacement of the affected line. This work will need to be conducted by an external contractor.

Safety Advisory:

Avoid contact with Braddock Run and surrounding flood-impacted areas. Keep children and pets away from any standing water, streams, or low-lying wooded areas in the vicinity. Do not attem to approach or access damaged sewer infrastructure, as the area is unstable and hazardous.
