Still No Indication Of When Washington St. Bridge Might Re-Open

In early April the Washington Street Bridge was closed indefinitely based on results from an engineering inspection- and while some progress has been made, still no indication as to when the bridge might re-open. Deterioration at the bridge forced it to be reduced to one lane in August 2012. The lane closure was done to reduce the weight load. The Washington Street bridge is one of three aging bridges on the city's West Side, all owned by CSX Transportation. Others are on Fayette and Cumberland streets. The poor condition of all three bridges has received much attention in the last two plus years, including studies and public meetings addressing their futures. Mayor Brian Grim tells WCBC News that some repairs have been made, but not to the extent that it can be re-opened. Talks are ongoing, including a proposal that would see the city accept the infrastructure responsibilities- although that comes with a price tag…
