Maryland residents are encouraged to do their shopping for shoes and clothes this coming week as the state’s “Back to School” tax-free week began Sunday, August 9, and runs through Saturday, Aug. 15. During this time, purchases of any single, qualifying article of clothing or footwear priced $100 or less — regardless of how many purchased — will be exempt from the state’s 6 percent sales tax. Comptroller Peter Franchot has spent the past few days highlighting the upcoming tax-free week in Maryland- with various stops across the state. He said that losing the tax revenue for a week is more than off set by the large increase in the number of people shopping- including those coming to Maryland from surrounding states to take advantage of the promotion
