A Garrett County resident, identified only as Melissa, now has the record for the largest black bear killed in the state. The hunter killed a black bear on the first day of the season that weighed in at 643 pounds in her home county. The Department of Natural Resources sponsors an annual bear hunt that started on October 23 in Maryland’s three western-most counties. Last year saw hunters take 103 black bears with an average weight of 177 pounds, the heaviest weighing in at 427 pounds.
