Toxic Wastewater Not Coming to Maryland

April 3rd, 2023 by WCBC Radio

Toxic wastewater from the early February train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio will NOT be coming to Baltimore for treatment, essentially blocking the water from traveling through Cumberland.

This follows backlash from the Baltimore City Council as well as an online petition with over 1,000 signatures opposing the move by Clean Harbors to bring the waste to Baltimore for treatment and release ultimately into the Chesapeake Bay.

The wastewater contains vinyl chloride which has been shown to be a cancer-causing agent. Clean Harbors is now seeking an alternative solution to process the wastewater.
