UPMC Doctor Says Processed Foods Encourage Colon Cancer

November 4th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

Increasing incidences of colon cancer are being seen worldwide. In the state of Maryland, Allegany County has one of the highest colon cancer statistics in the state at 94 cases per 100,000 people.  Dr. Syed Pasha from UPMC Western Maryland Gastroenterology says tobacco and alcohol are known causes for colon cancer, but even small amounts of red meat and processed foods in the diet are also cause for concern…

“If you eat more than 100 grams of red meat per day that increases your chance of developing colon cancer by 16%.  For processed foods—especially processed meats—if you consume just 50 grams per day that can increase it by more than 20%.”
