WV Gov. won’t sign budget, but won’t veto

June 21st, 2017 by WCBC Radio

Gov. Jim Justice said this morning he “can’t possibly put my name” on the budget passed last week by the state Legislature in special session. But Justice won’t veto the bill, either. He said he will let it become law without his signature, avoiding a looming shutdown of state government operations. Justice made the announcement at a press conference at the Capitol. While saying he was happy with the budget including funding for his roads initiative, which is expected to create jobs, he said he was disappointed by the deep cuts the plan makes to higher education and multiple other programs, including public broadcasting. During the press conference, Justice said the bill the Legislature came up with doesn’t fix any long-term problems and sets the stage for further budget problems in the immediate future.
