Board of Education Will Discuss Accepting Gifts After Painting Controversy

August 9th, 2011 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County Board of Education Finance Officer Randy Bittinger will brief the board tonight on a proposed public gifts/donations policy. Indications are that the  policy is being developed as a result of an ongoing controversy over two portraits of George Washington that were given to the school system earlier this year. Donated in February by the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization, the paintings were returned to the group’s president- Ed Taylor last month, after a dispute over whether to display the organization’s logo, which includes a Christian cross. Taylor is planning on pursueing legal action and is also calling for the resignation of Superintendent David Cox.
