Allegany County BoE Bracing For Difficult Budget Year

As a result of further decline in student enrollment numbers, the Allegany County Board of Education is bracing for another difficult budget year, with preliminary estimates indicating that state and county funding could be reduced by about $1.6 million. The local school system lost more than 100 students according to the numbers released this fall and that means fewer dollars coming in. The local school system could take another hit as a result of the wealth index formula, which takes into account real property values, personal property values and taxable income from tax returns. Superintendent David Cox said that he has been talking to his counterpart in Garrett County and a legislative priority will be to see both education formulas evaluated and perhaps changed to lessen the impact on rural Maryland school systems…
