Bob Kirk, who took a small community college in Cumberland and turned it into a national basketball powerhouse, has died at the age of 83.
Coach Kirk arrived at the then Allegany Community College in 1971, building his program with a base of hard playing locally produced talent. He would step away from the sidelines in 2004, after compiling a record of 927-158. He would remain as the college's Director of Heath, Physical Education, and Athletics until 2012.
His teams would advance to the National Tournament on a regular basis, and he built the reputation of being able to harness the talent of players with national reputations. The result also led to a string of 30 plus win seasons and an impressive list of All Americans.
Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.

That no similar transformation of the school’s academic stature was bothered with speaks volumes about the area and its mostly self-inflicted troubles.
