Downtown Traffic Moving Freely Again

May 11th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The main drag in downtown Cumberland returned to normal Wednesday afternoon as city staff and workers from Carl Belt Inc. finished work on a large downtown water line repair project involving the replacement of five major valves. The repair work forced the closure of the busy Baltimore and Mechanic streets intersection to traffic for nearly three days. Although some downtown businesses and residences braced for lengthy water outages, except for a portion of Monday, most were never without water service. The work was done in two phases. Two weeks ago, workers from Carl Belt, with help from city staff, repaired a water supply issue in front of The Kensington senior living facility, where two 14-inch lines joined a 20-inch line.
