Fatal Vehicle Accident On I-70

On 03/14/2018 around 1318 hours, Troopers from the Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barrack were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision on Westbound Interstate 70 west of Interstate 81 involving a gold 2003 Dodge Caravan and a white 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer hauling two trailers. The results of the investigation concluded that the 2003 Dodge Caravan driven by Rakiesha Mathis was traveling eastbound Interstate 70 west of Interstate 81. Witnesses stated the Dodge Caravan was traveling in lane # 1 on eastbound Interstate 70, when the vehicle drifted into lane # 2, at that time the driver over corrected and caused the vehicle to travel into the center median causing the Dodge Caravan to go airborne and travel into westbound Interstate 70. When the Dodge Caravan crossed the center median into the Interstate 70 lanes of travel, the Dodge Caravan collided with a 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer pulling two trailers, driven by Gregory Esthers.  

The Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barrack, Maryland State Police Crash Team, Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, and Maryland State Highway Administration responded to the scene.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan, Rakiesha Tayana Mathis was pronounced deceased at the scene.
