Two confirmed dead in I 81 Accident

March 26th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

Vehicle Accidents on I-81 at the 24 Mile Marker have shut down the Interstate in both directions. Three people confirmed dead as a result.  Earlier this morning on the Dave Norman Program, Mark Widmyer advised he was southbound headed to Martinsburg when he came upon an accident in the northbound lane that seemed to involve several dozen vehicles, including two overturned tractor trailers.

Five medical helicopters were sent to the scene, and at least 14 people have been taken to the hospital.  The Maryland State Highway Administration is reporting traffic backups into the free state due to the crash.

In the meantime, a surprise snow storm caused Maryland State Police to activate the snow emergency plan and advise against traveling on I 70 west of Clear Spring, due to slick roads and white out conditions.

Roadways have been plowed and treated. Motorists are still urged to use caution when traveling in low temperatures and remember bridges may have icing in isolated areas.
