Legend Once Almost Purchased Local Radio Station

March 24th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Joe Garagiola, who died this week at 90, once almost closed a deal to buy a Cumberland radio station.

It was 1970, and Garagiola had already made his mark as both a baseball broadcaster and host and guest on a variety of NBC programs, including the Today Show.  The popular broadcaster gained local headlines when he announced he would be buying WTBO, which was an NBC Network affiliate.

The deal eventually fell through, and shortly after that, Garagiola bought a Lakelake, Florida, station.

Pictured below are Garagiola and former WTBO announcer Jeff Hunt.
