Maryland State Police Continue Work On Gun Purchases Backlog

State Police have finished all of the roughly 38,000 gun purchase application, and now all that remains is background checks. That backlog has been fueled by a frenzy of gun purchases in the state ahead of the stricter purchase rules that begin on October 1.  State Police have tapped into staff from other state agencies such as corrections to help mainly with data entry to streamline the process of checking at least 16 different databases to do the background checks.  Critics have attacked that effort saying the added personnel are not properly cleared for such sensitive work and that further they are using unencrypted and unsecured servers that could expose sensitive personal information. State Police insist that is not the case and there are taking all appropriate steps to protect confidentiality.
