Maryland’s War On Drugs

Maryland is still fighting the war on drugs with weapons that may do more harm than good, according to the Justice Policy Institute, based in Washington, D.C. Using mandatory minimum sentences for Maryland drug offenses is not only one of the least effective ways to discourage this kind of behavior, but also one of the most expensive. In a policy brief, the Institute found that the great majority of Maryland's correctional resources are focused on incarcerating drug offenders rather than treating them.
