Teachers And School Service Personnel Request Funding For Raises

Teachers and school service personnel dominated the first public hearing on the Allegany County Commissioners proposed budget for next year. Several spoke out asking the commissioners to fully fund the budget request made by the Board of Education- primarily in order to be able to provide raises for teachers and staff.  Commission President Michael McKay did not mask his frustration with another call for additional education funds. The county will increase funding for public education next year, but only to maintenance of effort levels required by the state. McKay took exception to the suggestion from ACTA representatives that the request is a modest one. He said to fully fund the board’s request would cost the county an additional $1.3 million. He also noted that the current board of commissioners have made tremendous financial commitments to education in recent years…
