Test Pits To Be Drilled Today And Tomorrow On Downtown Mall

Today and tomorrow will see the drilling of test pits on the Downtown Cumberland Mall.  This is part of the initial phase in preparing for the major re-design of the mall and is part of the work of the EADS Group, an engineering and surveying firm, to create designs and analyze the cost of renovating the downtown mall. The plans include opening the east end of the mall to one-way vehicular traffic flowing from George Street to Centre Street.  Paul Kelly, executive director of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation, said the test pits are a necessary initial step as the overall redesign plan also includes replacing underground utilities and installing high-speed broadband lines. The hope is that the drilling will not be a major inconvenience for downtown businesses or shoppers…
