Two Arrested on Gun Charges After Disturbance

On Tuesday, June 30th, 2020 the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Blaul Avenue for the report of an assault with a firearm.  When officers arrived, contact was made with numerous individuals that stated that prior to arriving; two male suspects showed up with handguns and during a verbal argument, one of the males displayed a handgun; pointing it and making threats towards them.  The males then fled the area on foot.  A description of the males was broadcasted to additional officers and one of the suspects was located in the area of Arch Street and taken into custody.  He was identified as Kevin Robert Mason-Sheftz and two handguns were located concealed in his clothing.  The other male that pointed the firearm was identified as Matthew Ryan Thomas by the individuals on scene.  He was located on Grand Ave and placed under arrest. Mason-Sheftz was charged with handgun on person, loaded handgun on person, obstructing and hindering, and conspiracy to commit 1st degree assault.  Thomas was charged with 2 counts of 1st degree assault, 2 counts of 2nd degree assault, loaded handgun on person, firearm in use of a violent crime, conspiracy to commit 1st degree assault, obstructing and hindering, and disorderly conduct.  They both were taken before the District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held without bond.
