City Discusses Modernizing Bicycle City Code

December 3rd, 2025 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council discussed modernizing their 1966 City Code for bicycle traffic during Tuesday’s Open Work Session.  Revisions will be made over the next several weeks to also prohibit skateboards, scooters, electric bikes, electric scooters, and electric skateboards from Downtown’s sidewalks.  Children’s riding devices like scooters, wagons, automobiles, tricycles and the like will still be allowed.  City Administrator Jeff Silka says the revisions are for the safety of the pedestrians…

“This isn’t against ebikes, this isn’t against bicycles.  We’re a very bike friendly town.  We have bike lanes, you know, we’re making them use the rules of the road.  So, this is just keeping them off sidewalks that are meant for pedestrians.”
