County: “Crickets” From FEMA

October 6th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

On Thursday, the Allegany County Commissioners approved another half-million dollars in contracts for repairs and restoration in the Georges Creek area for flood damages. The total spend for the county is now touching $4 million. With the federal government shutdown, an answer from FEMA for relief funds has been further delayed. Administrator Jason Bennett said all they’ve heard is “crickets” as far as an answer…

“Noting from FEMA on our appeal. The state’s been very helpful to us as far as staffing and giving us money to give back to residents, which is great. No one to date has helped us with infrastructure dollars.”

Bennett said the county has exhausted the funds left from their share of lottery proceeds and they are now tapping general fund monies…

“If nothing comes out of this, no state funding, no FEMA funding, we’ll be here before too long asking you to approve a borrowing. So, that’s the point we’ve reached. I hate that we’re there, but that’s where we’re at.”
