Bank Robbery Foiled

Maryland State Police arrested a man suspected of robbing a bank on Thursday morning in western Maryland.

The suspect Leonard Kaschenbach Sr., 62, of Lonaconing, Maryland was arrested Thursday. He was transported to the Cumberland Barrack for processing and charges are pending.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, an armed man entered the M&T Bank at 1201 National Highway in LaVale, Maryland, and passed a note to a teller demanding money. The employee turned over an undisclosed amount of money to the suspect, later identified as Kaschenbach, who then exited the bank. Witnesses told investigators that they saw him crossing National Highway heading south along Campground Road.

Maryland State Police troopers responded to the scene after witnesses called 911. With the assistance of a citizen, Kaschenbach was located inside of a restaurant in LaVale and taken into custody without any further incident. No injuries were reported as a result of this robbery.

Investigators from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigative Unit (C3I) responded to the scene and are assisting in the investigation. Personnel from the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, along with deputies from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Department, also assisted with this incident.
