While he is expected to be sworn in for a fourth term next month, for the time being Craig Robertson is retired from his position as Allegany County Sheriff. His announcement came via social media in October and revolves around rules of his pension. On his Facebook page, Robertson stated that he was temporarily stepping down from his post, due to his retirement from the Maryland State Pension System. His retirement became effective October 31st , just a week before the election. In accordance with the SRPS, by law there must be a 45 day separation period. There have been some criticisms, most notably pointing to a lack of transparency considering that no official press release was issued, and many people went to the polls last week not knowing that he was no longer serving as sheriff.
