Volunteers and School supplies needed for Stuff the Bus

County United Way is gearing up for our annual Stuff the Bus event scheduled for Friday, August 18th from 9am to 5pm. Any businesses or organizations interested in collecting school supplies can either pick up a collection box from the County United Way office between 8am and 4:30pm or they have the option to decorate their own collection box and compete against others’ for the best decorated box. Fetterman Introduces Contraception Legislation

Sen. John Fetterman, joined by over a dozen of his Senate colleagues and Rep. Lauren Underwood in the House, introduced the Convenient Contraception Act, legislation that would improve access to contraceptive products, including over-the-counter contraceptives.  The bill provides individuals covered by private health insurance with the option to receive up to a full year of contraception at the time their prescription is issued instead of the current three-month supply or less that is standard in many states — an evidence-based policy that improves health outcomes. McCourys Nominated for Bluegrass Awards

The DelFest Family is celebrating the twelve nominations that Del McCoury, The Travelin’ McCourys, Jason Carter and others received from the International Bluegrass Music Association for their annual awards.  Nominations include Entertainer of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year for the Del McCoury Band, Best Male Vocalist for Del McCoury, and Mandolin Player of the Year for Ronnie McCoury.  The awards will be presented in September at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, North Carolina.   The Travelin’ McCourys newest single, “The Whole of the Moon” was released on Monday.

North Mechanic Street Arrest

On Monday, July 24th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the 100 block of North Mechanic St for a trespassing complaint. Upon arrival on scene, officers located a male subject sleeping on the front porch at the property. Officers awakened the subject and ordered him to gather his belongings and leave the area. At this time, the subject became irate and began yelling obscenities at officers. After repeated requests, the subject refused to cease his disruptive behaviors. Criminal Summons Served

On Monday, July 24th, 2023, The Cumberland Police served a Criminal Summons on Joyce Lynn Miller, 57, of Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on July 11th. During the incident, it is alleged that Miller was operating an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle. Miller was served the summons and released, pending trial in District Court. Two Winners At Parkview Liquors

Parkview Liquors on Greene Street sold not one, but two winning Bonus Match 5 lottery tickets over the weekend.  The winners have 182 days from the drawing date to claim their winnings. The numbers drawn were 10, 14, 15, 32, and 34.  The Lottery Commission said Parkview will receive a $1000 bonus for selling two top-prize winning tickets.  Rob Robinette from Parkview Liquors said this isn’t the first time he has had winners… Robinette reviewed what the next steps are for the winners in getting their prize money…      

Hogan Once Again Avoids Candidacy Claim

Moderation is building momentum in the upcoming Presidential election.  Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said on MSNBC’s “Inside With Jen Psaki,” that polls continue to show that 70% of people in America do not want Donald Trump or Joe Biden to be President.  While he skirted around the topic of whether he would become a candidate for the Presidency, Hogan did say that while he is not well known across the country, his approval rating as Governor was 77%, the highest in the country when he left office.  He said a third party ticket may be the way to go…

No Proposals Yet for Allegany HS Site

No proposals have yet been received for developing the site of the old Allegany High School on Cumberland’s West Side.  The 12-acre parcel has been leveled and is ready for building but the county has not yet received any proposals – the deadline has been extended for developers to submit their plans.  County Administrator Jason Bennett says that is not uncommon… Bennett also said that there are discussions about infrastructure around the site for traffic flow, but mostly the site is ready to be developed.  The County is hoping for a mix of housing options on the site.  The new…

June Jobs Report Shows Well for Maryland

Maryland added 4,700 jobs in June, making the state’s unemployment rate 2% – the 5th consecutive month that the state has seen a decline.  The Department of Labor’s June Jobs report shows Maryland retaining a positive comeback from the pandemic with 4,700 new jobs added in June.  The major areas of growth were the Mining, Logging, and Construction industries that showed 3,900 new jobs.  Leisure and Hospitality also showed growth of 2,800 jobs, driven by summer tourism and recreation.  Declines were seen in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities where the report showed a loss of 2,200 jobs and there were also…
