Bishop Walsh Appoints New Boys Basketball Coach
Ryan Mattingly has been named head varsity boys coach for Bishop Walsh Spartan Basketball, according to BW Principal Jennifer Flinn. Pirates Trade Carlos Santana
The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded Carlos Santana to the Milwaukee Brewers for shortstop prospect Jhonny Severino. Santana hit 12 home runs for the Pirates this season and played strong defense at first base.

Energy Efficiency Assistance
Allegany and Garrett counties will benefit from grants awarded by the Maryland Governor’s office to increase the number of homes eligible for energy efficiency assistance. $4 million in grants were awarded to six jurisdictions across the state. Two of the state’s rehabilitation programs – the Homeowner Assistance Fund Whole Home Grant Program and the Maryland Housing Rehabilitation program have been consolidated. The new program will increase the number of homes assessed for energy efficiency improvements but have been deferred for health and safety reasons. ACM Tuition Remains Unchanged for Fall
While college tuitions are increasing across the state, Allegany College of Maryland has managed to control costs for attending classes. Shauna McQuade, Director of Public Relations and Marketing, told WCBC that the tuition at Allegany College for the coming fall semester has not increased over last year for local residents. Student fees also remain the same. There has been a small increase for out-of-county and out-of-state residents.

Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Warrants & Arrests
A District Court bench warrant from Frederick County was served on Kristen Nicole Smith, 33, Cumberland for Failure to Appear for the charge of CDS Possession – Not Cannabis. She was released on her own recognizance. A Circuit Court bench warrant was served on Shawn Thomas Conner, 50, Meyersdale, PA for Violation of Probation. He is currently being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center pending a bail review.
CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED
On July 26th, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Christopher James Manherz Sr. The summons was issued after an officer from the Cumberland Police Department conducted an investigation of an assault complaint made on July 5th, 2023. The officer filed for charges at District Court, and Manherz signed for a copy of his summons. He was released pending trial at District Court. Maryland Buy Local Week Focuses on Foods
Maryland has marked the week of July 21-31 as “Maryland Buy Local Week” with a focus on local foods available in every community. The Allegany Farmers Market brings together vendors from across Allegany, Garrett, and Mineral Counties twice a week to offer locally grown produce, meats, and other items. Melinda Kelleher, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Commission spoke to WCBC about the wide variety of products available… The Farmers Market takes place on Thursdays and Saturdays from 9:30 till 1pm through the end of October at Canal Place.
WV Residents Investigating Solar Energy
West Virginia residents are becoming more interested in community solar, as a greater share of household incomes goes toward utility bills. Federal data shows electricity rates are increasing in the Mountain State, and major utilities are proposing more rate hikes for next year.
