Arrest Warrants Served

On July 20, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served two arrest warrants on Aaron Josip Racic for violation of probation. Racic was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center and held without bond. Arrest: Aaron Josip Racic, age 39, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Assault 2nd degree, CDS administer equipment possession to distribute. On July 20, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served a out of state fugitive(Missouri) on Shannon Cooney-Mcaloney. Cooney-Mcaloney was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center and held on a bond of $1000.00. Arrest: Shannon Cooney-Mcaloney, age 32, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Driving while intoxicated.

North Centre Street Closed, temporary Water Service Outage planned today

North Centre Street will remain closed between Union Street and Frederick Street through Wednesday, July 26th. This extension is due to unforeseen utility conflicts in the intersection of Centre Street and Baltimore Street. Additionally, a temporary water service outage is planned for customers on North Centre Street between Frederick Street and Baltimore Street on Friday, July 21st. The outage will occur between 9AM and 1PM. Affected customers shall be notified with door hangers.

Bedford Police Investigate Child Luring Incident

State Police in Bedford are investigating the attempted luring of a child in the Everett Borough.  Police say the incident occurred in the area of North Spring Street and East Fourth Street around 8pm this past Sunday when a man reportedly attempted to lure a 7-year-old girl behind a dumpster by offering her candy. Troopers say the girl ran inside her home and the man fled the scene.  The suspect is described as a tall, middle aged white male with blonde hair and he was reportedly wearing a red shirt and dark blue shorts.  Police are asking nearby residents to…

Keyser Grad Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholar

Twenty-seven West Virginia high school seniors who have graduated this year have been selected for the fourth cohort of Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars.  The students chosen will receive the state’s newest scholarship of up to $10,000 per year for their college education as they prepare to pursue careers as West Virginia teachers. The Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars Program is designed to address ongoing teacher shortages in the fields of math, science, special education, and elementary education. Non-Profits Get Monies From Hotel/Motel Tax

Seventeen non-profit groups will benefit from monies donated to them by the Mayor and City Council.  Disbursements from the hotel/motel tax receipts totaling $45,000 were divided among the groups who applied for funding earlier in the year.  Those groups receiving funding include Allegany Allied Arts, Cumberland Jaycees, Friends Aware, Mountainside Baroque and the Schoolhouse Quilters Guild.  Community groups can apply annually for a portion of the hotel/motel tax receipts.

SSI May Be Available to Social Security Recipients

The Social Security Administration wants to make sure Marylanders know about the Supplemental Security Income program. Social Security includes old-age, survivors, and disability insurance.  Supplemental Security Income or S-S-I is a federal assistance program providing financial support to individuals with limited income and resources who are elderly, blind, or disabled, including children.  In Maryland over 31-thousand people receive both S-S-I and an additional social security benefit. While the standard social security benefit is available to most retirees, some recipients may only qualify for partial benefits and may still fall below the federal poverty line. NFL owners approve sale of Commanders from to Harris

NFL owners unanimously approved the sale of the Washington Commanders on Thursday to a group led by Josh Harris and including Magic Johnson for a record $6.05 billion.  32 team owners voted for the sale, which is the highest price paid for a North American professional sports team. After the finance committee approved the agreement with the new ownership group, Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment Snyder had owned his favorite boyhood team since 1999, when he bought it for $800 million. Stuff the Bus school supply drive to benefit students in Allegany County

County United Way is proud to announce their annual “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive to benefit students in Allegany County will take place on Friday, August 18, from 9 am to 5 pm in the Walmart parking lot in LaVale and also the Staples parking lot in LaVale. Both businesses are helping by allowing a bus to be parked in their parking lot so that volunteers can fill them with school supplies.  “This event has been incredibly well supported in the past,” said Michele Walker, County United Way Executive Director.
