Twenty high school students from Maryland and Pennsylvania participated in the 2023 Frostburg State University STEM Summit on the FSU Campus June 20-23. Students were presented with a scientific problem relating to a hypothetical deep space mission. Participants received instruction in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geography, and physics taught by FSU faculty. On the final day, STEM teams presented their solutions for the mission to judges from NASA, Northrup Grumman, and Villanova University. Atlantic Sports Network has agreed to pay $100 million each following dispute
The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network has agreed to pay the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles around $100 million each following a protracted dispute over the value of the Nationals' television rights from 2012 to 2016, a person familiar with the matter said Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither team had made an announcement. The Washington Post first reported the settlement, which removes one hurdle in the Lerner family's efforts to potentially sell the Nationals franchise.
Grand Avenue Burglary Arrest
On June 21, 2023 Cumberland Police Officers were dispatched to the 400 Block of Grand Avenue, for a report of subjects in an abandon house. Officers arrived and located the residence. Officers located a rear door that was unsecured with heavy damage. As Officers entered the residence two subjects were located. The adult male was identified as Cameron Elijah Naecker. Neacker was arrested and transported to ACDC. He was later released on ROR. Arrest: Cameron Elijah Naecker, 22, Cumberland, Maryland. Charge: 4th Degree Burglary
Handgun Arrest
On June 21, 2023 Cumberland Police Officers were dispatched to I68 EB Cumberland Maryland for a traffic complainant. Officers were advised a subject was walking down the interstate. Upon arrival Officers observed a male subject walking down I68 EB. The Officers made contact with the subject later identified as Jason Allen Brown. Brown advised the Officers that he was currently in possession of gun. Officers located a handgun in Mr. Browns backpack. It was determined that Mr. Brown was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. Brown was arrested and transported to ACDC. Brown is currently held on $5000.00. Arrest: Jason…
Skate Park Update to City Council
Cumberland’s Skate Park is in the news again. After some restructuring of the group involved in wanting to locate the skate park in the area, Stephanie Hutter-Thomas and Greg Kerr made a presentation to the Mayor and City Council at their monthly meeting with an update on what is happening. Hutter-Thomas made a presentation about how the park can go a long way in creating a safe environment for children as well as adults and noted that skateboarding is an inexpensive sport that is multi-generational. Scammers After Grieving Families
A malicious scam has been occurring in the area involving funeral homes. After receiving a warning that scams might be happening, Wendy Upchurch of Upchurch Funeral Home was aware, but not overly concerned about the situation coming to the local area. Then, one of the families the funeral home was taking care of received a call that ended up being the exact kind of scam she had been warned about. FAMLI Program Delayed One Year
Before it has even started, FAMLI – Maryland’s Family And Medical and Leave Insurance program has had several modifications through Senate Bill 828, passed in the recent General Assembly Session. The program was established through the Time To Care Act and Maryland is the eleventh state to adopt a statewide family and medical leave program. Up to 12 weeks of leave with partial wage replacement would be available for self or family member care. With the program start delayed, employers and employees will now start contributions to the fund in October of 2024 instead of 2023 and employees can submit…
City Clean-Up Continues
The City of Cumberland’s clean- up efforts continue June 23-25. The first weekend saw a record number of tires brought in by residents – so many that no more can be taken. Otherwise, the second weekend of the clean-up will have dumpsters at White Oaks Shopping Center for trash and bulk items. It is suggested that bulky items be broken down before bringing them to the site so dumpsters can hold as much as possible. I-95 Bridge to Reopen After Collapse
If you want to catch a Phillies home game this weekend, there shouldn’t be a traffic backup on I-95. A gas tanker traveling across a bridge on Interstate 95 crashed and caught fire on June 11th, causing the bridge to collapse. Since then, traffic has been a tangle in the Northeast Philadelphia area as the collapse affected a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Construction crews have worked around the clock to repair the damage and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced that the bridge will be ready for traffic this weekend…
