Mayor Brandon Scott told WBAL Thursday that the police are doing their job by arresting people, but that it's up to the state's attorney's office and judges in the city to make sure those people stop going through the revolving door that allows them back out on the street as soon as they're arrested. BENCH WARRANT / CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Wednesday, December 14, 2022, the Cumberland Police Department served a Circuit Court bench warrant on Mary Yoder.  The warrant was issued as the result of Yoder failing to appear in court on December 13, 2022.  Yoder was originally charged with False Statement to Officer.  She was arrested and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center where she is currently being held without bond pending her initial appearance before the court. MD State Employees Liberal Leave

On Thursday, December 15, 2022, the State has declared liberal leave beginning at 6am through the end of day shift in Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington Counties. Liberal leave until 10am for the following counites: Anne Arundel Baltimore Baltimore City Cecil Harford Howard Kent Montgomery Prince George’s Emergency Essential Employees should report as scheduled.  Non-emergency essential employees who report to the office or a worksite to work may use liberal leave upon notification to the employee’s supervisor.  Teleworkers should work as scheduled unless leave is granted.

No Public update on former Memorial hospital site

It was an April that Cumberland City officials agreed to transfer ownership of the former Memorial hospital site to the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation. Future plans for the location included construction of a housing development specifically market rate residential housing. Located in South Cumberland the hospital was vacated in 2009 with the opening of a new hospital on Willowbrook road. A major Economic Development boost in Western Maryland will begin to come to fruition in just a few weeks. In 2021 the Maryland General Assembly approved a measure to invest $50 million in economic growth in the district over 4 years with$ 20 million arriving in January of 2023. Maryland public defenders vote to join state workers’ union

WBAL reports Maryland public defenders voted Tuesday to unionize after a two-year effort. Workers at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender, which employs more than 600 people, voted to certify AFSCME Maryland Council 3 as their exclusive bargaining representative. The union says one bargaining unit will consist of administrative and support staff, and another bargaining unit will consist of intake staff, investigators, social workers and attorneys. The Maryland Defenders Union (AFSCME Local 423/MDU) first announced their intent to unionize in August 2020.
