$329 Million in Funding for Projects Across Maryland

Chief Deputy Comptroller Andy Schaufele joined Lt. Governor Aruna Miller and Chief Deputy Treasurer Jonathan Martin for today’s meeting of the Board of Public Works. During the meeting, the Board approved a settlement of nearly $2.9 million under the Walter Lomax Act for Mr. James Langhorne, who spent 9,870 days incarcerated due to a wrongful conviction. Police Silent Regarding Public Disturbance and Assault

Cumberland’s Police Department has yet to release information regarding a large public disturbance that occurred Saturday morning just before 1:40 a.m. in the Merchants parking lot in downtown Cumberland. The Joint Communication Center received multiple 911 phone calls regarding a large crowd of over 30 individuals yelling and screaming with 5 individuals fighting in the parking lot. The crowd began to disperse when sirens from a law enforcement began to approach the scene. A patrol officer arrived and briefly spoke with members of the crowd. Ordinance Violation and Violation of Probation Arrest

On Sunday, July 6, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department were conducting routine patrols of the Downtown Mall when they observed a male sleeping in a storefront on makeshift bedding. Upon making contact with the individual to inform him of the violation, he was identified as Christopher Emerson. Officers learned that Emerson also had three active arrest warrants and was then placed under arrest. He was issued a civil citation for violating the City ordinance and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center, where he awaits his initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner. Virginia Avenue Theft and Malicious Destruction of Property Arrest

On Sunday, July 6, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 400 Block of Virginia Avenue for a theft complaint. Upon arrival, Officers were provided with a description of a male they knew to be William Stewart Sr. The Officer located Stewart outside the store, where he was then detained. Upon watching security footage, Stewart was observed taking items from the store without making a purchase. Stewart was then observed taking a baked good from a display case and then spitting it out onto other items on the shelf. Stewart was placed under arrest…

City of Cumberland Zoning Board of Appeals Vacancy Announced

The City of Cumberland Zoning Board Appeals is seeking to fill a Board member vacancy. This membership seat requires City residency and the availability to attend periodic meetings. The Zoning Board of Appeals is a 5-member board appointed by the Mayor and City Council, established to hear and decide appeals to decisions made by the Zoning Administrator in the enforcement, interpretation or administration of the Zoning Ordinance. Each Board member serves a 3-year term and is paid $25 bi-weekly, with the Board meeting on an as-needed basis.   

Gov. Moore Announces Increased Energy Assistance Benefits

Governor Wes Moore today announced that eligible Maryland households will begin to see increased energy assistance benefits. Through the Maryland Department of Human Services Office of Home Energy Programs, the additional benefits will help families respond to rising energy costs. “At a time when the federal government is passing dangerous, heartless legislation to cut assistance for working families, we are standing in the breach,” said Gov. Morriss and Silka Take on MML Responsibilities

Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss has been elected to the board of the Maryland Municipal League.  City Administrator Jeff Silka was elected President of the Maryland City Administrators Association.  The actions took place at the recent MML Convention in Ocean City.

Medevac Lands on Bay Bridge

A crash on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Friday morning involved the landing of a Medevac helicopter on the bridge.  The crash happened at 11:30 a.m. when a car crashed into a tractor trailer.  The driver was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

Rabid Sheep in West Virginia

A case of rabies has been confirmed in a sheep on a Monroe County farm in West Virginia.  The Monroe County Health Department confirmed the sheep tested positive for the dreaded viral ailment on Wednesday. The animal was located on a farm in the Gap Mills area of the county.

City Police Report for Saturday

On Friday, July 4, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on William Dibuono. The originating incident occurred on February 14, 2025, when Dibuono was arrested for trespassing. Search incident to arrest yielded a controlled dangerous substance and associated controlled paraphernalia. A criminal summons was issued for Dibuono. He was served with the summons and released pending his trial at the Allegany County District Court.
