CDS Arrest on Greene Street

On Monday, May 22, 2023 at approximately 12:51 PM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Greene Street.  A police K-9 alerted to the odor of drugs in the vehicle.  The officer searched the vehicle and located drug paraphernalia.  The operator of the vehicle was placed under arrest.  The officer later discovered that the operator had provided him with a false name.  Police identified the suspect as Jonathan Duckworth.  He was transported to Central Booking and later seen by a District Court Commissioner for his bond hearing.  Duckworth was released on his personal recognizance. FRAUD ARREST

On Monday, May 22, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Larry Baker.  The warrant was issued in connection with a fraud investigation that was initiated on March 30, 2023.  On this date, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a Winifred Rd. address and met with the alleged victim who reported that Larry Baker stole her checkbook and forged checks in her name.  After further investigation, police filed for charges against Baker at the District Court of Allegany County.  Baker was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  He was later seen by a District…

On Monday, May 22, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Kimberly Vollmerhausen.  The warrant was issued as the result of Vollmerhausen failing to appear in court on June 7, 2022.  She was originally charged with Motor Veh/Unlawful Taking, Veh/Rented: Fail Return, and Fraud Conversn/Lease Goods.  Vollmerhausen was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  She was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and posted a $2,500 unsecured personal bond. Water Outage planned for Wednesday May 24th in downtown Cumberland

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Triton Construction, would like to notify the public as part of the South Mechanic Street closure a water outage will take place in the following areas starting at 8AM: S Liberty Street between Baltimore Street and Harrison St, and Canal Street including Canal Place on Wednesday, May 24th. The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Triton Construction, would like to notify the public that South Mechanic Street will be closed to thru traffic between Baltimore Street and Pershing Street between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM on Wednesday, May 24th. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Trucks will be detoured to Queen City Drive to avoid the closure. Get Paid to Pay it Forward campaign

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice has introduced the “Get Paid to Pay it Forward” campaign, compensating drivers for transporting individuals to substance use treatment.   Part of the “Jobs & Hope For West Virginia” program, the initiative addresses transportation challenges faced by people seeking substance use treatment.  The governor noted that substance abuse increased during the Covid pandemic… The campaign welcomes anyone to sign up as a driver – paid per mile – with the ability to choose assignments. Mountain Valley Pipeline given the green light for construction on national forest land

The Mountain Valley Pipeline, a long-delayed natural gas pipeline that will run through Virginia and West Virginia, was given the green light for construction on national forest land last week.  The 303-mile pipeline, which will transport natural gas from Ohio and Pennsylvania, still has a number of federal hurdles to clear before it can be completed, but the approval from the US Forest Service  is an important step in the process.  West Virginia US Senator Joe Manchin specifically mentioned the need to approve the Mountain Valley project when discussing permitting reform last week…. 2 Charged in Frostburg Shooting, More Charges Pending

The mass shooting at a Frostburg house party that killed one and wounded four on May 7th was carried out by six young men, four of them current Frostburg State students according to arrest warrants. Benjamin Atyam 21-year-old Frostburg State student was taken into custody on May 16th during final exams. He has been charged with multiple felonies in the shooting, including first-degree murder. Atyam acted with five other individuals to commit the murder citing an ongoing feud as the motive.
