CUMBERLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE May 19, 2023 Adult arrest On May 19, 2023 at approximately 6:26pm officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a shoplifting call at 35 Queen City Drive, Family Dollar. Officers made contact with Shannon Hewlin. Hewlin was placed under arrest and issued a Criminal Citation for theft less than $100 dollars and released. Fatal Crash on I-68 Late Friday Night

A fatal motor vehicle collision Friday night took the life of an Ohio woman.  Maryland State Police report the accident occurred at 11:14 p.m. on I 68 westbound near Jeffries Road in Allegany County.  A Honda passenger vehicle was driving the wrong way when it collided with a passenger van.  Killed in the accident was the driver of the Honda, Jacalyn Scharf, 70, of Willoughby, Ohio.  The driver of the van, Lawrence Moyer, 51, and his passenger, Tammy Moyer, 52, both of Barton, were transported to UPMC for treatment of their injuries.  Westbound I 68 was closed for five hours.

New Athletic Director Appointed at Bishop Walsh

Bishop Walsh School has announced that Mitch Peters will be the new athletic director, succeeding Dan Prete.  Peters is an English instructor at the school who coached cross country last fall and was an assistant girls basketball coach.  Peters played basketball, baseball, and soccer in high school in Mendham, New Jersey, a suburb of New York City.  He graduated from Kutztown University and earned his Master’s Degree at Montclair State.  Peters came to Cumberland with his wife Alison, pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Cumberland.

Allegany Softball Upset in Playoffs

The defending state champion Allegany Campers have been knocked out of the playoffs.  Catoctin upset the Campers, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Lions Field.

Shawn Ricker Retiring as Calvary Coach

A successful local basketball coach is retiring.  Shawn Ricker is leaving his post as girls basketball coach at Calvary Christian Academy after compiling a 146-56 record after 8 years.

Moore Increases Maryland Green Energy Goal

Governor Wes Moore has signed an executive order doubling Maryland's energy conservation goal for state-owned buildings from a 10% decrease by 2029 to a 20% decrease by 2031. The order will ensure that Maryland’s state government leads by example in addressing the harmful impacts of climate change while saving taxpayers money through reduced state utility costs. The order directs the Maryland Green Building Council to update the High-Performance Green Building Program to ensure that all new buildings and major renovations that are subject to the program align with Maryland’s goal to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

Day of Caring & Sharing Success

Friday’s Day of Caring and Sharing was a time for volunteers to come out, clean up and revitalize sites across the county.  County United Way Director Michele Walker reflected on the day and the many helping hands that made it a success.

Friends Aware Summer Sizzle

Summer Sizzle June 16th from 4 till 9PM at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. Friends Aware, Inc., a Cumberland-based nonprofit organization serving adults with developmental disabilities, presents the Summer Sizzle. The event features music by Appalachian Road Show, a bluegrass-style band that has appeared at the Grand Ole Opry. There will be food vendors, a beer truck, and gaming. Congressman David Trone (D-MD) reintroduced the Ritchie Boys Congressional Gold Medal Act. The legislation would award the Congressional Gold Medal to the Ritchie Boys, a group of soldiers who played a vital role in intelligence gathering during World War II. This legislation, first introduced in the last Congress, has received significant bipartisan support to honor the courage, bravery, and dedication of the Ritchie Boys.
