Health Departments Receive Grants

The Maryland Health Resources Commission recently awarded eleven grants totaling $7 million dollars to support programs across the state. The Allegany County Health Department received just over half a million dollars for programs supporting maternal and child health. The Garrett County Health Department received $360,000 for telehealth and transportation programs. The state is looking to provide greater access to health care for underserved communities and promote health equity.

ACPS Seeks To Fill Ethics Panel Vacancies

The Allegany County Board of Education is currently seeking to fill two vacancies on its Ethics Panel. The Panel’s responsibility is to provide advisory opinions, conduct hearings on ethics complaints, and make recommendations to the Board on matters relating to conflicts of interest, financial and lobbying disclosures. Ethics Panel members serve five-year terms. Applications are on the Allegany County Public School website under the Job Opportunities. The deadline to submit applications is May 1.

CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Thursday, April 17, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Billy Holden Jr.  The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing for charges against Holden at the District Court of Allegany County.  Holden signed for his copy of the summons and he was released pending trial. ARREST WARRANT SERVED

On Thursday, April 17, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Michael Wempe.  The warrant was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on February 27, 2025 at approximately 2:48 PM when officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Seton Drive and Bishop Walsh Rd. for the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.  Officers arrived on scene and learned that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.  The Cumberland Fire Department responded and transported the patient to the hospital for further treatment of their…

Solar Panels Threaten to Obscure Cash Valley and Helmstetter’s Curve

During last night’s Allegany County Commissioner’s meeting, residents of Cash Valley showed concern regarding the former Helmstetter farm becoming a solar project.  Greg Donaldson, a resident of the valley for over 30 years, said the 15,000 panels would affect the attraction to Cash Valley and Helmstetter’s Curve… “The current owner did not take into consideration the impact this would have on tourism and the iconic farm scene that has been enjoyed and photographed by many biking and hiking the Great Allegany Passage trail or riding the scenic railroad train from Cumberland to Frostburg." WCBC Radio 50th Anniversary Kick-Off Begins Today

WCBC officially took to the airwaves on April 19, 1976 but the year-long celebration begins today. Throughout the year up to the 50th anniversary in 2026, listeners will hear new branding on the station for news, weather and other programs. Throughout the weekend, a special feature on WCBC’s first employee, engineer Marty White will be highlighted. More events will be rolled out as the celebration continues.

Van Hollen Meets With Obrega-Garcia

Late Thursday, Maryland US Senator Chris Van Hollen reported he had met with Kilmar Obrega-Garcia.  Van Hollen's social media shared a photo of the two at a dining table. Little detail was given on the visit.  The Senator said he would give more details on his return from El Salvador.

City Budget “In Good Shape”

Mark Gandolfi, the Comptroller for the City of Cumberland, gave an initial budget presentation during the Mayor and Council work session this week. For Fiscal Year 2026, the city is looking at a $32.7 million dollar budget with roughly $29.5 million in expenses. West Virginia Congressman Pushes for Another Federal Holiday

U.S. Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., wants to add a new holiday to the calendar.  The freshman congressman has joined Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., in an effort to make Easter Monday, the Monday directly following Easter Sunday, a federal holiday.  If the bill becomes law, Easter Monday would be the 12th annual holiday recognized by the federal government, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The others are: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
