Garrett County’s superintendent of schools says she will retire at the end of the current academic year.  Brenda McCartney made the announcement at last week’s school board meeting.  McCartney became superintendent in May, 2023.

A West Virginia construction worker was killed early Saturday morning on Interstate 64.   At 4:30 a.m. the worker for Triton Construction mistakenly stepped into traffic and was struck by a bus.  The name of the victim has not yet been released.

ASSAULT ARREST On Friday, September 12, 2025 at approximately 11:58 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 600 block of Lincoln Street for an assault.  Police contacted the alleged victim who reported that she was assaulted by Michael Sharon.  Officers observed that the victim had sustained injuries.  After further investigation, Sharon was placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing and remanded to the Allegany County Detention  Center without bond. On Friday, September 12, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served two bench warrants on Hawke Coffman.  One warrant was issued as the result of Coffman failing to appear in court on an original charge of Malicious Destruction of Property less than $1,000.  The other warrant was issued as the result of Coffman violating probation on an original charge of Escape-2nd Degree. Coffman was arrested and seen by a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing.  At the conclusion, Coffman was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond. A group of area pastors has organized a candlelight prayer vigil for this evening, beginning at 8pm to pray for national healing.  The event will take place at Cumberland’s City Hall Plaza between Frederick and Bedford Streets. The vigil follows the death earlier this week of Charlie Kirk, a well-known conservative political activist and head of Turning Point USA. He was shot on Wednesday during an outside speaking engagement in Orem, Utah.
