Gov. Justice announces release of $12.7 million in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation Funds

 Gov. Jim Justice released today more than $12.7 million in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation Funds dedicated to infrastructure renovation, dam restoration, stream restoration, and wastewater treatment projects. A busy morning for Allegany County Emergency Services currently out working a house fire in Keyser. Initial reports of the house explosion catching an adjacent residence on fire. Mutual aid in effect, multiple fire crews are on scene at this time. 

FCC has terminated radio station license WQZS in Meyersdale

The FCC has terminated the license of Meyersdale radio station WQZS after determining that owner Roger Wahl “lacks the qualifications to remain a Commission licensee.”  Whal had pled guilty in 2020 to criminal charges including reckless endangerment, unlawful dissemination of intimate images and tampering with evidence.  The Federal Communications Commission is also dismissing a petition asking to transfer the station’s license to Wahl’s daughter, Wendy Sipple. WQZS had been allowed to continue broadcasting during the FCC’s investigation but now has until May 22 to go off the air.

CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Kimberly Appold.  The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing for charges against Appold at the District Court of Allegany County.  Appold signed for her copy of the summons and was released pending trial. ARREST WARRANT SERVED

On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Christopher Cheek.  The warrant was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on April 14, 2023.  On this date at approximately 8:03 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the first block of Greene Street for an assault.  Police contacted the victim who reported that he had been assaulted by Christopher Cheek.  The victim explained that Cheek approached him and began striking him in the face with closed fists.  Officers observed injuries to the victim.  After further investigation, police…

City of Cumberland 2024 budget has good and bad news for citizens

The proposed 2024 budget for the City of Cumberland has both good news and bad news for citizens.  At Tuesday’s Mayor and Council work session, City Comptroller Mark Gandolfi explained that water and trash rates have to increase next year to keep those systems running in the black… The good news is that the City will be able to maintain the same property tax rate for 2024 and actually generate more revenue as the property tax base has expanded…

County Administrator Bennett remains hopeful for tenant at shell building

Allegany County Administrator Jason Bennett spoke on the Dave Norman show Tuesday about ongoing hopes for a business tenant for the long-empty and waiting shell building in Barton. Negotiations with a tire recycling company have been continuing for some time and Bennett is hopeful to have work on this project come to fruition soon for the county’s economic development.

Ciera Davisson recipient of WCBC Radio Scholarship

Ciera Davisson, a senior at Frostburg State University was a recent recipient of the WCBC Radio Scholarship. Davisson is from Cecil County, Maryland and is an Education major with a specialty in math.  She is president of the Frostburg State Education Association and will be attending and speaking at the next national conference in June in Orlando, Florida.  Ciera is the first member of her family to attend university and has maintained a 4.0 grade average while working to support her way through college.

$18 million dollars in funding to upgrade essential Wastewater and Storm water systems for MD

U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressman David Trone have announced $18 million dollars in funding to upgrade essential wastewater and stormwater systems to protect public health and waterways in Maryland. This funding from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund will be used to upgrade and modernize wastewater and stormwater infrastructure throughout Maryland. This funding builds on the $2.4 billion announced for clean water infrastructure upgrades nationwide through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
