Softball Swept by NDC on the Road

The Frostburg State Softball team dropped their doubleheader road series the Notre Dame (OH) Falcons Saturday afternoon by scores of 7-3 and 3-1. Action started early in game one for the Bobcats, as freshman Arden Miller singled to left field, then with two outs sophomore Jamie Roberts stepped into the box and sent one over the fence, bringing her and Miller across home plate for a 2-0 lead. Betsy Paye and Cynthia Mappin Pass Away

Betsy Paye, the wife of prominent local attorney Bob Paye, has died at age 81.  Paye was the daughter of Robert and Anita Robinette and a graduate of Ursuline Academy.  She was an x-ray technician at Sacred Heart Hospital and an avid runner.  She is survived by husband Bob and children Brad and Alix. Cynthia Mappin, wife of former Allegany County Commissioner Rick Mappin, died at age 78.  Mappin was a native of Frostburg and a longtime music teacher at Beall High School.  She is survived by Rick Mappin and her two sisters.

Rolling Mill Frustration Continues

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council met in a closed work session last week as the city continues to grapple with what course of action to take with the almost dormant Rolling Mill project.  Although most properties have now been sold by previous homeowners, little to nothing has happened in recent months with the 6 acre plot.

General Assembly Session Ends Monday

The Maryland General Assembly session closes at midnight Monday night.  Issues for the final day include cannabis and gun rights.

Frostburg State University celebrates its 125th anniversary Sunday.  The university was founded as a teacher’s college in 1898.

Friday Arrest in City

***Adult Arrest*** On Friday, April 7th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police arrested Bernard Eltoine Wilcher, 34, of Washington DC. Wilcher was arrested on an active Arrest Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court for an incident that occurred on April 4th. During that incident, an officer with the Cumberland Police attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop on the vehicle Wilcher was operating. As the suspect vehicle came to a stop, Wicher immediately exited the vehicle and began to flee the stop on foot, running into a nearby apartment building. Fair Housing event on Tuesday, April 25th at Allegany College

To coincide with the 55th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, the Cumberland Human Relations Commission will be hosting its annual Fair Housing event on Tuesday, April 25th in the Continuing Education building at Allegany College of Maryland.   The event involves the Human Relations Commission, Allegany College, and the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights.   There will be presentations on prevention of housing discrimination and accessibility education.

McHenry Barrack Troopers make Traffic stop and CDS arrest

On 4/6/23 at approximately 0914 hours Troopers from the McHenry Barrack conducted a traffic stop on a Ford passenger vehicle in Grantsville. The vehicle was stopped due to the driver and front seat passenger not wearing their seatbelts.  During the course of the traffic stop a K-9 scan was conducted on the vehicle which resulted in a positive alert. A subsequent search by Troopers lead to the discovery of various amounts of heroin and CDS paraphernalia in the vehicle. As a result the driver, Amanda Loraine Ruble of Mt.    Maryland residents and visitors are invited to practice what to do in the event of a tornado as part of Maryland Severe Storms Awareness Week, April 10-16,  2023.
