State Mandates Part of County Budget Issues
Counties statewide continue to take steps toward balancing FY26 budgets, but some issues they face are not of their own making. Within the budget approved by the Maryland Legislature, spending for some areas has now been pushed down to the counties, causing new budget concerns. Garrett County Drug Arrest
On April 3, 2025, Deputies with the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle along Third Street in Oakland for traffic violations. During the course of the traffic stop, a Sheriff’s Office K-9 was utilized and conducted a scan of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert. A subsequent search of the vehicle and occupants revealed a quantity of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
