Three Agencies Absorb Bulk of Federal Cuts
Just three federal agencies make up more than half of the total federal workforce reductions that have occurred so far under the Trump administration, according to data compiled by the nonprofit Partnership for Public Service. The Departments of Defense, Treasury and Agriculture have cut their staffing levels this year by a cumulative total of about 106,000 employees, out of an estimated 199,000 federal employees across the government who have left their jobs since January, either voluntarily or by force.
Mountain Ridge High School Placed in HOLD status
Today, September 10, 2025, Mountain Ridge High School was placed in a brief HOLD status due to a medical emergency. First Responders arrived on scene and provided medical service. School administrators gave the “All Clear” and the instructional day resumed as normal.
CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing charges against Tilson at the District Court of Allegany County. Pinnacle Wind Farm’s 2025 Grant Application Open for Area Nonprofits
The US Wind Force Foundation is accepting applications for grant funding from the Pinnacle Wind Farm’s Community Benefit Fund. Clearway Energy, owner and operator of the Pinnacle Wind Farm, will distribute $20,000 in grants to qualified nonprofits in the communities surrounding the 54-megawatt wind farm in Keyser, West Virginia. Maryland 2025 Black Bear Hunt Lottery Results Announced
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has drawn the winning lottery entries for the 2025 Maryland Black Bear Hunt. Those selected will receive a permit valid for the six-day bear hunting season open from October 20-25, 2025 in Allegany, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington counties. Entrants can check the black bear hunt webpage lottery results section for their DNR ID number. A total of 4,410 hunters applied for the lottery with 52% of permits going to Western Maryland residents.
Flight 93 Memorial Plans Remembrance
Remembrances are scheduled across the country for Thursday, marking 24 years since the September 11th terrorist attacks. At the Flight 93 Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, an observance begins at 9:45am. This will include the Bells of Remembrance, which will toll starting at 10:03am for each of the 40 passengers and crew that died on the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony.
Longtime Times-News Sportswriter Passes
Steve Luse, the former sports editor of the Cumberland Times-News, died Monday at UPMC Western Maryland at the age of 79. Luse worked at the newspaper from 1972-2014 and was renowned for his coverage of the Allegany College Trojans of Hall of Fame Coach Bob Kirk. A native of York, PA, Luse received his degree in journalism from West Virginia University. The Upchurch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be at Central Assembly on Bedford Road Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with services at 1 p.m.
DISORDERLY CONDUCT ARREST
On Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at approximately 11:33 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department were conducting patrols of the downtown mall when they observed Sherman Denmark yelling and cursing. Denmark was warned multiple times to stop yelling or he would be arrested. Denmark refused to listen and continued to cause a public disturbance. Governor Moore Officially Announces Reelection Bid
Maryland Governor Wes Moore Tuesday formally announced his reelection campaign in the 2026 election with Lt. Governor Aruna Miller as his running mate. All eight of Maryland's U.S. House seats will be on the ballot as well.
