School Board member urges public to get informed on Candidates

Although she opted not to seek a second term, Allegany County Board of Education member Deb Frank remains keenly interested in the make-up of the board moving forward. Frank’s decision not to run again leaves one board seat wide open, while her fellow incumbents Robert Farrell and David Bohn are seeking new terms. There are a total of seven candidates seeking one of three seats with next month’s primary election eliminating just one of those. During the regular monthly meeting of the board, Frank encouraged the public to take the time to get to know those who are looking to…

Maryland General Assembly leaders reject President’s call for gas tax holiday.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday called on states to impose a gas tax holiday, but WBAL reports that is not likely to happen in Maryland. In a joint statement released by House Speaker Adrienne Jones and Senate President Bill Ferguson, both have rejected the idea of a gas tax holiday. Both said Maryland has already done what the president is proposing at the federal level in imposing a gas tax holiday while using money to boost the Transportation Trust fund. Ferguson said states cannot unilaterally bear the burden of increased gas prices driven in part by Putin's aggression in Ukraine…

Input Sought on Future Uses for Carver Building

Anxious to move beyond what some called the“theatrics” that dominated this week’s discussion on the future of the Carver building- Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss said the priority now is to gather input from the public about the best possible uses for the facility. On Tuesday, officers from the NAACP criticized the city and the Carver Community Center Board, suggesting a case of systemic racisim. Mayor Morriss, who also serves as chair of the Carver Board, says its time to move beyond that mini controversy and focus on the real issues moving forward. As such, individaul duscissions with the Carver Outreach Communittee on June…

Alleged large numbers of illegal immigrants setting up residence at Rocky Gap State Park

For several years now there have been complaints made by some segments of the community about alleged large numbers of illegal immigrants setting up residence at Rocky Gap State Park. It is a subject that was broached by an elderly woman speaking at Thursday’s regular meeting of the Allegany County Commissioners. Some research revealed that it is true that state parks across Maryland receive an influx of Hispanic people during the summer- with one report stating that Hispanics are the fastest-growing segment of Maryland park patrons. While the woman addressing the county officials was there primarily to complain about taxes,…

FDA bans Juul e-cigarettes tied to teen vaping surge

Federal health officials on Thursday ordered Juul to pull its electronic cigarettes from the U.S. market, the latest blow to the embattled company widely blamed for sparking a national surge in teen vaping. The action is part of a sweeping effort by the Food and Drug Administration to bring scientific scrutiny to the multibillion-dollar vaping industry after years of regulatory delays. Maryland Treasurer Not Happy with proposed Gun Control Measure

The US Senate has taken a first step towards passing what has been called the most significant new gun controls in a generation. The Senators voted to speed up passage of a bipartisan  bill, meaning it could be signed into law next week. Although significant, the proposals fall far short of what many Democrats and activists have called for in the wake of a spate of mass shootings. You can count Maryland Treasurer Derek Davis among those unimpressed with this proposal. Speaking during the regular Board of Public Works meeting, Davis, a Democrat, said both sides continue to play politics and provide…
