On September 1st, 2022 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on James West IV. The Arrest Warrant was issued by both Circuit Court on August 18th, 2022. West was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center where he was held without bond. Arrest: James Nathaniel West IV, age 30, Washington DC. Maryland Program to See Reuse of Medical Equipment for Residents
The Maryland Durable Equipment Re-Use Program is a, first of its kind, statewide initiative that provides durable medical equipment (DME) to Maryland residents with any illness, injury, or disability, regardless of age, free of charge. It was initiated by the state’s department of aging. Examples of acceptable DME for donation are wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, and scooters. AAA Expects Rise in Labor Day Travel
The Labor Day getaway is expected to be near pre-pandemic levels, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. People began hitting the roads Thursday afternoon and the Maryland Transportation Authority said it expects more than 350,000 vehicles will cross the Bay Bridge between Friday and Labor Day Monday. Casper Taylor Bridge Construction Pushed to Spring 2023
Supply chain issues and skyrocketing inflation has forced the city to delay groundbreaking for the Baltimore Street/Casper R Taylor Bridge replacement project to next spring. Bids for the project were received this week with all three construction firms coming in well above the estimated $4 million price tag. The lowest bid received came from Carl Belt Construction totaling a little more than $4.7 million. Triton Construction of St. Albans West Virginia bid was $5.8 million; while Orders Construction, also out of St Albans came in at $6.6 million. Tri-State Zoological Park to Close October 2
After years of legal battles with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and having to essentially shut down for the pandemic- the Tri-State Zoological Park will close its doors permanently a month from today- October 2nd. Zoo owner Bob Candy told the Cumberland Times News he has been looking to close for about a year. The zoo officially opened to the public in June 2003- and featured mostly rescue animals. COVID-19 Numbers on the Rise in Allegany County
As COVID transmission rates around the region continue to be elevated, Allegany County remains at the CDC’s High Community Level for COVID-19. In regions where community levels of COVID are high the CDC recommends that individuals wear a high-quality mask in public indoor areas. The CDC also states that if you are at high risk of getting very sick from COVID-19, consider avoiding non-essential indoor activities where you could be exposed. UPDATE: Accident on Interstate 68 East at Maryland Avenue
Allegany County Emergency Services reports a vehicle accident on Interstate 68 East at the Maryland Avenue exit. City police, fire and ambulance units responded to the scene. One lane was closed which had traffic congested, but it re-opened just after 4 and traffic is moving again.

Maryland gubernatorial candidates Democrat Wes Moore and Republican Dan Cox have agreed to a debate that you'll hear on WBAL NewsRadio. The debate is scheduled for Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. It will air on WBAL NewsRadio 1090 and FM 101.5, WBAL-TV 11, Maryland Public Television and WRC-TV in Washington. Facing mounting legal challenges and with many of the animals getting old, the Tri-State Zoological Park will close Oct. 2. Bob Candy, the zoo’s owner said he has been looking to close the zoo for about a year. Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, the zoo hasn’t charged for admission. The zoo officially opened to the public in June 2003, the Monday after Heritage Days. Candy took a big cat to the festival as a sort of primer for the zoo’s opening.
