Police Search for Suspects Involved in West Side Shooting

Law enforcement agencies around Allegany County were looking for two men Tuesday following an afternoon shooting that reportedly injured one person on North Chase Street in Cumberland. The suspects in the 3 p.m. incident were described in police radio broadcasts as two Black men driving a blue van. The injured person was taken to UPMC Western Maryland by a Cumberland Fire Department ambulance. The extent of the victim's injuries was unclear.

UPMC Issues Statement on Nursing Shortage

The Maryland Hospital Association this week  released a report that warned they are in need of nurses. The report showed one in every four nursing positions in Maryland is currently vacant. That equated to the association being down 5,000 registered nurses and 4,000 licensed practical nurses. Those numbers could double or triple by 2035 if action is not taken, the report showed. Cardin has no problem with Pelosi Taiwan Visit

Nancy Pelosi met with Taiwan's President last week as part of what many view as a  defiant visit to the island that China claims as part of its territory. China's strong objection to the House speaker's trip, which made her the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Taiwan in a quarter century, came with warnings and ignited concerns among the American military. Baltimore Street Project Could be put out for Bids Today

City officials may be putting the $10 million downtown mall renovation project out to bid to prospective construction companies today. Known as the Baltimore Street Access Project, plans include reinstalling Baltimore Street through the downtown pedestrian mall following the replacement of underground utility lines. The project is essentially considered a roads project and  has been going back and forth between the city and state and federal highway administrations. Board of Education Adopts Relaxed COVID-19 Protocol for 2022

Masking will largely be voluntary; contact tracing won’t be in place and social distancing no longer required. Although COVID-19 numbers are spiking in the region and the new school is right around the corner, the Allegany County Board of Education has adopted a far more relaxed set of COVID protocols. Debby Metheny, Director of Special Education and Student Services, presented an overview of the new COVID strategy for schools to begin the 2022-2023 school year. Virginia man arrested for impersonating police officer

On, Tuesday Robert Frederick Sauvage, 62, of Arlington, VA was arrested for impersonating a police officer in Cumberland, MD. The arrest occurred after a deputy with the Allegany County Sheriff's Office, operating an unmarked patrol vehicle observed Sauvage's vehicle operating flashing emergency lights as it traveled on I68 westbound. Sauvage was traveling directly in front of a Cumberland Fire Department ambulance which also had its emergency equipment activated. The deputy noticing that the vehicle was registered in the State of VA conducted a check which revealed that the vehicle was owned by Sauvage and not an official emergency service.    Upon contact with…

Police Seeking help in locating Buglary Suspect

The Cumberland Police Department and the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigations Unit are asking the public for help locating a man wanted in connection to a burglary. Police officers responded to a burglary call in the 200 block of S. Centre Street shortly before 9:30 AM on July 29, 2022. Officers and investigators were able to establish that Christopher Jason David Moore, 25, of Cumberland was responsible for the burglary. Police Serve Criminal Summonses

On Monday, officers of the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Jaren Brunson. On July 20, 2022 Officers from Cumberland Police Department were dispatched to a Columbia Street address for a report of a burglary. The victim advised Officers that an unknown male entered her residence without permission. The victim advised the subject to leave but removed a bicycle that did not belong to the suspect. The suspect was identified as Jaren Brunson. Officers made contact with Jaren Brunson. Brunson admitted to entering the residence and removing the bike.
