Guns, Drugs Seized in I-68 Traffic Stop
At approximately 3:30 Thursday morning, Deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling Westbound, on Interstate 68, near the 42 mile marker. Upon making contact with the occupants, Deputies developed probable cause to search the vehicle. During the search, Deputies located a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl, along with a 9MM handgun, and an assault rifle style shotgun. Additionally, Deputies located packaging material and various controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia which further indicated an intent to distribute the controlled dangerous substances. The US Senate has taken a first step towards passing what has been called the most significant new gun controls in a generation. The Senators voted to speed up passage of a bipartisan bill, meaning it could be signed into law next week. Police departments across the nation are facing an uphill battle to protect communities as they grapple with staffing shortages, rampant crime and widespread anti-police rhetoric. Efforts to hire additional police officers continue in Cumberland. In the past few months residents have voiced concerns about vagrancy, drug trafficking and assaults. West Virginia Reports Strong Employment Trends
Governor Jim Justice on Wednesday announced that West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased to 3.5% for May 2022, breaking the all-time record for the lowest unemployment rate recorded in state history for the 8th consecutive month. The number of unemployed state residents decreased by 500 in May, while total employment grew by 1,700 over the month.
