Digital Asset Lending Platform BlockFi for Sales of Unregistered Securities

BALTIMORE, MD (September 30, 2022) – Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh today announced that a digital-asset financial services company, BlockFi Lending LLC (BlockFi), entered into a Consent Order with the Securities Division to settle offers and sales of unregistered securities in the form of interest-bearing digital asset deposit accounts called BlockFi Interest Accounts (BIAs) to Maryland residents. As of December 31, 2021, BlockFi had 407,030 BIA investors in the US, of which more than 8,524 were Maryland residents. The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland will hold a Public Work Session on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 4:00 PM in the 2nd Floor Conference Room of City Hall. The Mayor and City Council's regularly scheduled Public Meeting will be held at 6:15 PM in the City Hall Council Chambers. Adult Arrest Report

On September 30th, 2022, The Cumberland City Police arrested Benayah Reuben Del Toro, 26, of Cumberland MD. Del Toro was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court. The warrant alleged that Del Toro failed to appear in District Court on September 27th  for charges of obstructing, theft, and disorderly conduct. He was taken before the District Court Commissioner for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held on $2500 bond. 40th Great Allegany Run set for today

The 40th Great Allegany Run will take place on Saturday, October 1, and traffic patterns along with the route from Mount Savage to Cumberland will be affected. Runners for the 15K will begin near the Masonic Building in Mount Savage at 8:00 a.m. and proceed to downtown Cumberland along the westbound shoulder of state Route 36 and onto Route 40 through the Narrows. They will enter Cumberland on Mechanic Street, turn onto Queen City Drive and then Harrison Street and will finish near the downtown Cumberland mall on South Centre Street.  There will be some traffic delays on Route 36…

Maryland car seat law takes effect Saturday

WTOP reports a law in Maryland about children’s car seats goes into effect Saturday. It aims to clear up some confusion about the type of car seat that should be used. “We want to keep our youngest children in the vehicle as safe as possible,” said Chrissy Nizer, the administrator of Maryland’s Motor Vehicle Administration. “If there’s a crash, being rear-facing is much more protection for them — and that’s why we encourage it up to age 2, and certainly as long as possible that the child is able to comfortably sit in that rear-facing seat.” Nizer said car seats…

Keyser Council approves Water, Sewer rate hikes

Water and sewer rates will increase in Keyser in the next 45 days following the City Council’s approval of new fees this week. The Cumberland Times News reports that while City Administrator Jeff Broadwater first introduced the increases for consideration at a July 27 meeting, council members voted at their Aug. 24 meeting to restart the notification process in order to give written notice to all customers when September’s bills were mailed. Broadwater first broached the issue of raising the rates with the council publicly in March. The increases will take place over 18 months. Sewer rates will increase 15%…

Weather could threaten Preview of Champions event at Greenway

Weather permitting, today between the hours of 3:30pm-9:00pm., the Allegany Band Boosters will be sponsoring their annual Preview of Champions at Greenway Avenue Stadium.  Greenway Avenue will be closed at 4:00pm from Warwick Avenue to Brookfield Avenue for the duration of the event.  Motorists traveling on Brookfield Avenue will only be able to make a right turn onto Greenway Avenue once Greenway Avenue has been closed.  Cecil Street will be closed at Ridgewood Avenue and traffic will only be able to travel on Cecil Street from Greenway Avenue to Ridgewood Avenue.  Handicapped parking will be provided on Greenway Avenue.  

Comptroller Honors Children’s Literature Centre

Comptroller Peter Franchot visited Western Maryland this week presenting the 2021 Allegany County  William Donald Schaefer Helping People Awards. In Allegany County the award went to the Children’s Literature Centre. Founded in 1982 by Tom Palardy, William Bingman and Patricia Hancock to honor retiring long time professors from Frostburg State. What began as an annual festival turned into a much more permanent offering promoting children’s literacy and instilling a lifelong love of reading. The Centre is also celebrating its 40th anniversary. Their work to raise awareness about children’s literature, illustrators and authors has been tremendous. They have leveraged community networks and…

The Ali Ghan Shrine Club is presenting Bullride Mania Rodeo on Wednesday, October 5, 7:00PM at the Ali Ghan Picnic Grounds with clown Dave "Showtime" Meyer.
