The event features a cocktail buffet, silent auction, and dancing to the classic sounds of Queen City Funk and Soul. Proceeds benefit UPMC’s Center for Hope and Healing here in Cumberland – a 24/7 crisis resource facility for those struggling with opioid addiction and other substance misuse. The City of Cumberland’s Community Development Department has announced two grant programs designed in support of our Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative to reduce blight. Both programs are aimed at helping to revitalize properties within our community. The Home Rehabilitation Grant Program is intended for the improvement of a property in the city limits of Cumberland that is vacant and uninhabitable in its current condition. The property must be assessed under $100,000. Applicants will be eligible for a 50% matching grant, up to a maximum of $25,000 upon the completion of the project. Allegany County Public Schools will host a Student Mental Health and Wellness Fair on Wednesday, May 11, from 4-6 p.m. at Allegany High School. There will be large prize drawings for students in attendance totaling $1,000 in addition to prize drawings from the YMCA to include an Apple watch, Beats earbuds, and an Amazon gift card. On Sunday, May 1, 2022 at approximately 8:54 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Baltimore Street at N. Waverly Terrace for a possible assault in progress. A witness had observed a male pursuing a female on foot and the male tackled the female to the ground. Upon their arrival, police located a male standing next to a female who was sitting on the curb. City officials voted last month to accept $6.3 million in state grant assistance for renovations to the downtown mall. The funding is being issued through the Maryland State Highway Administration's Transportation Alternative Program to cover the reinstallation of Baltimore Street through the pedestrian mall. Baltimore Street extended through the downtown city center before the area was bricked over in 1977 to create a pedestrian mall. The funding represents a large portion of the project's estimated $10 million cost. U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, both Maryland Democrats have announced that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will release an additional 35,000 H-2B temporary non-agricultural worker visas for the second half of fiscal year 2022. These visas are vital to the small businesses that make up Maryland’s crab and seafood industries, and the supplemental release follows efforts from the Senators to press DHS to provide more visas after only one of Maryland’s ten crab processors was selected to receive them.
