Some Ocean City roads are closed due to remnants of Hurricane Ian
In Ocean City, a number of roadways are still shut down on Tuesday due to coastal flooding. Second Seventh Street and parts of Philadelphia Avenue are closed to drivers. The remnants of Hurricane Ian left behind flooding along the boardwalk, where crews used heavy equipment to push the sand off the boardwalk Monday. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been surveying beach erosion.
Loretta Lynn, coal miner’s daughter and country queen, dies
Loretta Lynn, the Kentucky coal miner’s daughter who became a pillar of country music, has died. Lynn's family said she died Tuesday at her home in Tennessee. She was 90. Police Serve Arrest Warrants
On October 3rd, 2022 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Nicholas Kneisley. The Arrest Warrant was issued by the District Court when Kneisley failed to appear for his trial at the District Court. New Car Seat Safety Laws Go Into Effect
A number of new laws went into effect in Maryland this past weekend- many of those focused on keeping the roadways safe. A new car seat safety law requires that children under the age of two must be placed in rear-facing car seats unless the child meets or exceeds weight and height guidelines. Monument Dedication Saturday for City Policeman Killed in 1907
A monument dedication will take place this Saturday for the only Cumberland Police officer ever killed in the line of duty. According to media reports from the time, Patrolman August Baker was shot Oct. 3, 1907, while attempting to make an arrest. He died from his wounds two days later and was buried at Greenmount Cemetery on Shades Lane on Oct. 7, 1907. The effort to place a monument on Baker’s grave site has been led by volunteers with the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization. Ed Taylor Jr is president of the organization. Union Rescue to Provide Update to City Today
Pastor Davis Ziler, director of the Union Rescue Mission, is scheduled to provide an update to city officials Tuesday on plans to relocate to the North Centre Street area. The proposal is not without opposition as a number of residents from that part of town voiced concerns during the last meeting of the Cumberland Mayor and City Council. The mission is currently located downtown at 16 Queen City Pavement where it first opened in 1963- however the building is in disrepair and no longer adequate. SHA to Resurface Eastbound I-68 Ramp to Vocke Road
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a $400,000 project tomorrow, Tuesday, October 4, to resurface more than three miles of eastbound I-68 (National Freeway) between one-half mile west of MD 658 (Vocke Road) and US 220 South (McMullen Highway) in LaVale. Weather permitting, the project should be complete by the beginning of November. As part of the project, crews will resurface the on-ramp from eastbound I-68 to MD 658. This will necessitate the temporary closure of the ramp, with a detour, during work hours from October 4 to October 11. Motorists will be directed…
