ACM to Host Transfer Fair

Allegany College of Maryland will host an in-person Fall Transfer Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 13 in its College Center Lobby. Representatives from more than 30 four-year colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic are expected to attend. Students will have the chance to learn about majors and minors, the transfer credit process, application deadlines, scholarship opportunities, and more.   Knowing what to ask representatives in a busy transfer fair environment can be a challenge. The 54th Annual Tri-State College Night to be held Tuesday

On Tuesday, October 11, Allegany College of Maryland will host the 54th Annual Tri-State College Night from 6:30-8 p.m. in the gymnasium. Tri-State College Night is sponsored by the Maryland College Application Campaign and the Allegany County School Counselors’ Association in partnership with Allegany College of Maryland and strives to help high school students make educated decisions about post-secondary plans.             Tri-State College Night provides students and parents with an opportunity to learn about various colleges, universities, and career and technical schools as well as branches of the military and their service academies.  To date, more than 50 of these…

Assault Arrests

On October 3rd, at approximately 11:26 pm officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue for a reported disturbance. Upon officers arrival they observed evidence of an assault and spoke with the victim. The victim advised that Kristie Dawson had thrown an object at them and struck them in the face causing injuries. Dawson was placed under arrest and taken before a District Court Commissioner where she was held without bond. Arrest: Kristie Lynn Dawson, age 36, Cumberland Maryland. DUI Arrest

On October 4th, 2022 an officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted patrol in the area of Queen City Drive and Harrison Street when they observed a traffic violation. The officer conducted a traffic stop and contacted the operator, Brian Hirsch, and observed evidence of impairment. After performing standardized field sobriety tests the officer observed further evidence of impairment. Hirsch was placed under arrest and later released on DUI related citations. Union Mission secures funding to relocate to North Centre Street

Despite plenty of objections and emotions running high at times for around two hours-  the Cumberland Mayor and City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve more than $700,000 in funding to the Union Rescue Mission allowing it to relocate to North Centre Street. Although the proposal to move the shelter to the site of the High Point Furniture Outlet building became public just two weeks ago- a contract on the property is in hand, and a closing date of October 21st is set. Justice urges older West Virginians to get the Omicron booster

While many of West Virginia Governor Jim Justice’s regular COVID briefings have centered on other topics in recent months ranging from abortion, to tax cuts to school safety- this week the governor focused primarily on the pandemic. West Virginia’s COVID-19 hospitalizations are back to “reasonable levels”. While the state’s pandemic metrics have shown improvements in recent weeks, Governor Justice noted that  members of the state’s most vulnerable populations continue to die. Hogan inching closer on decision to run for president in 2024

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is inching closer to making a decision to run for president in 2024. Maryland Matters reports that Hogan held a reception last week for top donors and supporters to talk about his prospects and a timetable for deciding whether to run for the Republican nomination for president in two years. After visiting the Iowa State Fair in August, Hogan will speak about bipartisanship at the Harvard School of Government on Wednesday, and, once again, attend the politics and eggs breakfast in New Hampshire on Thursday. North Centre Street Festival will have Italian Flavor

The second North Centre Street Festival of the year will be held this Saturday and it will include an Italian theme that harkens back to the popular Christopher Columbus Italian Festivals of the 1980’s. The festival is scheduled from noon until 9 PM  during which Ristorante Ottaviani’s 17th anniversary will be celebrated. New Grant program designed to upgrade downtown properties

Details of grant programs totaling nearly a million doillars were announced last week by city officials with the hope being that downtown business owners can utilize those funds to make upgrades to their properties. The Downtown Comprehensive Investment Program, which contains funds from the city of Cumberland, Allegany County and state of Maryland, was announced by the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation. CEDC executive director Matt Miller said the grant program includes three phases: façade improvement; infrastructure upgrades and residential development; and business attraction. Doctors have a message for vaccine-weary Americans: Don’t skip your flu shot this fall – and seniors, ask for a special extra-strength kind. After flu hit historically low levels during the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be poised for a comeback.
