ACM Expressions Magazine Wins First National Award

Expressions, Allegany College of Maryland’s student literary magazine, was named Best Magazine in 2022 by the Community College Humanities Association as part of its annual literary magazine competition. Original essays, fiction, poetry and artwork of 30 Allegany College of Maryland students were featured in Expressions.   “Expressions was chosen the top National Magazine from among thirty-four literary magazines submitted from community colleges in five different geographic regions across the country: Eastern, Southern, Central, Southwestern, and Pacific West. Hogan Announces Statewide Preparedness Efforts For Remnants of Hurricane Ian

Governor Larry Hogan Friday announced statewide preparedness efforts as the remnants of Hurricane Ian move up the mid-Atlantic, leading to coastal flood and gale warnings in the region. Arrest Warrant Served

On September 29th, 2022 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Marquis Lamar King. The Arrest Warrant was issued by the Circuit Court as a Criminal Indictment. King was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center where he was held without bond. Arrest: Marquis Lamar King, age 25, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Three Counts of Distribution of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, Three Counts of Possession With Intent to Distribute, Three Counts of Possession Not Cannabis    

Biggs expected to be removed from EMS post

After being suspended for most of this year- it appears Christopher Biggs will soon be officially out as Allegany County’s Department of Emergency Services EMS chief. Biggs was appointed to the post in  2019 and has since experienced a myriad of problems including his alleged involvement in a major deer poaching case in West Virginia;  and accusations from EMS union representatives of “questionable integrity”.   Shortly after news of the deer poaching case broke in January, county officials issued a statement announcing that Biggs was suspended from his job for an “alleged violation of law”. The Cumberland Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in a hit and run investigation. The incident occurred in the 100 block of Polk Street at approximately 10pm on September 29th, 2022. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Cumberland Police Department.

Debate simmering over future of Georges Creek Rail- Trail project

The president of Mountain Maryland Trails is concerned that potential plans for the former Luke mill location could create a roadblock for the proposed construction of a hiking and bicycling trail in the Georges Creek area. MMT president Larry Brock says he has heard speculation that a business looking to locate at the mill site plans to utilize the Georges Creek railroad lines for transportation. WBAL reports a new Maryland law takes effect this weekend that requires motorists to move over when any vehicle is on the side of the road displaying hazards or flares. Vehicle Accident with Injuries I-68 East at Frostburg

Allegany County Emergency Management reports a single vehicle accident on Interstate 68 East near Frostburg. One person reported injured. Units from Frostburg and Shaft and Maryland State Police responded to the scene.
