Commissioners Envision Housing Development at Former Allegany High School
With demolition of the former Allegany High School on Sedgwick Street getting underway this month, attention now turns to how best to utilize the land once that job is complete. Nearly 100 years old, the high school was shuttered after a new Allegany was constructed on Haystack Mountain in 2018. The school is owned by the county with the commissioners awarding the demolition project to a Culpeper, Virginia firm with a bid of close to $678,000. Voters Will Decide Recreational Marijuana on Referendum
With just a week left in the general assembly session, Maryland lawmakers have agreed to let voters decide whether to legalize recreational marijuana at the ballot box in November. The Maryland House voted 94-39 for a constitutional amendment already approved by the Senate. The House also voted 89-41 for a separate measure that takes steps to implement recreational marijuana, if voters approve, but it leaves matters of licensing and taxes for lawmakers to decide next year. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan approved a new congressional map Monday after a judge struck down a previous map and supporters of the original withdrew their appeals of that decision. Attorney General Brian Frosh, a Democrat, said the case was settled over the weekend. “Both sides have agreed to dismiss their appeals, and our state can move forward to the primary election,” Frosh said in a statement. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) is now accepting registrations for the Adopt-A-Highway Spring Statewide Cleanup set for Saturday, April 23. Disturbance Leads to Arrest
On Sunday, April 3, 2022 at approximately 12:46 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 600 block of Princeton Street for a disturbance. Upon officers’ arrival, they contacted the resident who advised that Aaron Soules was at the residence. It was known to police that the resident had a Protective Order against Soules and he was not allowed to be there. While speaking with the resident, Soules ran out of the rear of the residence. Police Make Arrest in Strong Arm Robbery
On Sunday, April 3, 2022 at approximately 2:17 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Fayette Street at N. Lee Street to check on the well-being of a subject laying in the roadway. Upon their arrival, they located the subject and observed that he had visible injuries. It was discovered that the subject was a victim of a strong-arm robbery. The suspect stole currency and property from the victim.
