Allegany County COVID-19 Update
Earlier this week, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced that – following the CDC’s June 18th authorization of Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for children age 6 months or older – vaccinations for young children are available statewide. In Allegany County, COVID-19 vaccinations for children under 5 years of age can be obtained from local pediatricians. Parents are encouraged to contact their pediatrician’s office to have their children vaccinated against COVID-19, and follow up with recommended booster vaccinations when eligible. Proposed Keyser Bridge could cost $25 Million
The Mineral Tribune reports the West Virginia Department of Transportation has proposed the construction of a bridge over the railroad tracks into Keyser's North End as part of a new program, the Rail Crossings Elimination program. City administrator Jeff Broadwater said the project cost being mentioned is $20-$25 million. It is a steep price tag but Broadwater says funding might be available if all the parties continue to work together.
Maryland to receive training funds under foreign trade program
Maryland will receive $1,219,178 from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide training and employment services to eligible workers affected adversely by foreign trade. The funding is part of $201,798,000 being distributed among 45 states and Puerto Rico. The allocation includes the initial and second distribution required by statute to the Trade Adjustment Assistance for Workers Program. An additional amount of approximately $22.4 million must be distributed before Sept. 30. Administered by the department’s Employment and Training Administration, the program supports training, employment and case management services, job search and relocation allowances and income support during training. Local Airport secures runway Funding
Congressman David Trone annunced that The Greater Cumberland Regional Airport recently received $1.15 million in federal funding to continue its runway upgrade project. The money was part of $9.2 million announced last week for runway reconstruction and rehabilitation projects at airports in Western Maryland and on the Eastern Shore. The local airport will continue work on its 5,048 feet of runway. The allocation will go toward the runway safety area and designing other areas of the airport infrastructure.

The Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade
The Supreme Court on Friday ruled 6-3 that states can restrict or outright ban abortion at any point during a pregnancy, overturning the 1973 decision that enshrined abortion protections in federal law, along with a subsequent decision that affirmed those protections in 1991. “Roe and [Planned Parenthood v.] Casey must be overruled,” Justice Samuel Alito, wrote in a draft opinion leaked last month, declared. “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”

Probation Violations
On June 23rd, 2022, The Cumberland City Police arrested Paul Williams Umstead Jr, 34, of Cumberland MD. Umstead was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court. The Warrant alleged that Umstead violated the terms and conditions of probation stemming from a previous assault charge. Umstead was taken before the District Court Commissioner for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held on $5,000 bond. With only one day left on the Supreme Court’s schedule to release opinions in this year’s term, Americans are still waiting for a ruling on the intensely watched case that is expected to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion ruling.
