Allegany County Commissioner Creade Brodie Jr during a recent budget session expressing frustration with the state’s decision to cut funding for the local library system- an action that could have led to reduced hours of operation. Gubernatorial Candidate Forum Monday on WCBC

Frostburg State University, Allegany College of Maryland and Garrett College will host a Gubernatorial Candidate Forum for the primary elections scheduled in July. The forum will be held beginning at 6:00 PM in the Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall in FSU’s Lane University Center. The forum is free and open to the public. President Biden to speak at Naval Academy graduation

President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak at the U.S. Naval Academy’s graduation and commissioning ceremony next month, the academy announced Thursday. The ceremony for the Class of 2022 is scheduled for May 27 at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. More than 1,000 students will graduate. Most will be commissioned as officers to serve at least five years, either as Navy ensigns or 2nd lieutenants in the Marine Corps.

Gas Line Project will Slow Greene Street Traffic Friday

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Columbia Gas of Maryland, would like to notify the public that on Friday, April 29, beginning at approximately 7:00 am, Greene Street will be under a flagging operation between Johnson Street and Smallwood Avenue. The operation will occur between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm.  The closure is necessary to allow Columbia Gas to make repairs to their gas main.   The traffic light at the intersection of Greene Street and Johnson Street will be turned off and flaggers will direct traffic around the construction site.   Delays should be expected. Smoke leads to temporary evacuation of Mount Savage School

Students and staff at Mount Savage School were evacuated today, Thursday,  as a precaution after a report of an odor of smoke in the building. Authorities immediately responded and were able to determine that it was the result of a faulty light ballast. Students were cleared to return to the building, and school operations have resumed as normal

City Councilman Frazier named to ACM board of trustees

Eugene  Frazier, a member of the Cumberland City Council, has been named to the board of trustees of Allegany College of Maryland. He was appointed by Gov. Larry Hogan to fill the board position left vacant by Joyce Lapp, who served for more than two decades. Lauded for being one of the “most accessible elected officials” by Allegany Magazine, Frazier was first elected to serve on the city’s five-person City Council in November 2016 and was reelected in November 2020. Police Make Disturbance Arrest

The Cumberland Police responded to a residence on the 400 block of Columbia Ave for a report a disturbance.  Upon arrival the officers spoke to the parties on scene.  Through the investigation it was learned that an argument took place between a male and female that lived at the residence.  During the argument the male struck the female.  The officers observed injuries to the female that were consistent with her account of the incident.  Based on the injuries, James Joseph Hartman-Nolan, age 23, was placed under arrest for Second Degree Assault.  He was taken to Central Booking for his initial…

Gulf War Memorial Damaged on Union Street

In the early hours of Tuesday morning a tractor trailer truck attempting to turn on East Union Street from Gulf Memorial Drive struck and damaged the Gulf War Memorial. The driver left the scene but the incident was captured on video. Reports surfaced in January that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other top Republicans had stepped up a personal campaign to persuade Maryland Governor  Larry Hogan to run for the Senate and help the party’s chances of regaining control of the chamber.
