Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman today issued the following statement on the ruling from The Honorable Judge James K. Bredar ordering the Trump Administration to reinstate fired federal workers: I applaud the U.S. District Court’s decision to issue a temporary restraining order, stopping the firings of thousands of hardworking Marylanders and requiring those previously fired employees to be reinstated. Maryland State Police Investigating Inmate Death At State Prison

State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at Roxbury Correctional Institution in Washington County. The inmate is identified as Lawrence Antonio Borom, 21. Borom was declared deceased at the scene by emergency medical services personnel. Police have identified a suspect, who is also an inmate. At approximately 7:30 p.m. yesterday, March 13, 2025, investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IID) contacted the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit regarding an inmate death. Cumberland Gateway Update

Dunkin’ Donuts and Chipotle are continuing pre-construction at the Cumberland Gateway site. Located directly across from Chick-fil-A, Mayor Ray Morriss says the layout stage of Chipotle has begun.  He also said Royal Farms will begin its construction stage once some utility steps are taken…     “They’ve got some utilities they have to move.  They’ve got a French drain they have to connect to the sewer line, and then you’ll be seeing the construction of the Royal Farms building there.  So, those are three that are coming hopefully all opening sometime this year.”

Water Leak Repair On Route 220 Southbound

Water service will be interrupted on McMullen Highway effective immediately for water leak repair.   The areas affected include McMullen Highway, Bowling Green, Cresaptown, Bel Air, Rawlings, and parts of LaVale.  

DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY ARREST

On March 13th, 2025, at approximately 8:03 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 200 block of Bond Street for a destruction of property complaint. Upon arrival an officer spoke with the complainant who advised that Christopher Michael Freeman Sr. had attempted to gain entry into their residence, and broke the screen door in the process. Upon further investigation it was learned that Freeman was also in violation of an active peace order. Freeman was subsequently placed under arrest. Water leak repair continues on Greene Street today

On Friday, March 14, 2025, from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, the water department will continue repairing a water leak on Greene Street.  There may be periodic interruptions of water service.  The southbound lane from Baltimore Street to Bridge Street will be closed with detour signage in place and no left turn available from Bridge Street to Greene Street.

Business Budget Tax Hearing

The Maryland House Ways and Means committee heard testimony this week on the proposed business services tax that would add 2.5% to many business services.
